The California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) has played a pivotal role in both the development and ongoing success of the Solar on Multifamily Affordable Housing (SOMAH) Program. From early advocacy that helped shape the legislation funding SOMAH to continued partnership in program implementation, CEJA has demonstrated a deep and lasting commitment to environmental equity and energy justice for California’s most underserved communities.
Throughout its partnership with SOMAH, CEJA has led critical community engagement efforts across the state. The organization has helped develop tenant education materials and facilitated workshops that empower residents with knowledge about utility bill savings and strategies to maximize program benefits. These sessions ensure that tenants are not just recipients of clean energy investments but active participants in California’s transition to a sustainable future.

“SOMAH is proof that when frontline community voices are centered, clean energy programs can deliver both environmental and social equity. Our collaboration with SOMAH has shown that equitable solar access isn’t just about technology—it’s about trust, education, and long-term community benefits,” said Tyler Valdes of the California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA).”

CEJA has also collaborated on ribbon-cutting events that go beyond celebration—they serve as opportunities to build trust, share success stories, and highlight the tangible impact of equitable solar investments. In addition, CEJA’s outreach to local elected officials has elevated awareness of equitable solar access and strengthened relationships that expand the program’s visibility and reach.
Representing more than 20,000 residents from affordable housing communities and communities of color, CEJA continues to align SOMAH’s goals with community-driven solutions. The SOMAH Program Administrators are deeply grateful for CEJA’s leadership and tireless work to ensure that environmental and social justice remain at the core of California’s renewable energy transition.
Beyond direct community engagement, CEJA also serves as a strategic liaison between SOMAH Program Administrators and a broad network of community-based organizations (CBOs). This collaboration ensures that program implementation remains grounded in local expertise and community priorities. By bridging technical program components with on-the-ground knowledge, CEJA helps foster inclusive communication and lasting program success.
