I see a new Base Service on my bill. What is this new charge?

California now requires utility companies to separate certain costs on electricity bills that show as Base Services Charges. This is not a new tax or charge. Even if your solar bill credits offset most of your energy use, you’ll see this small monthly fixed charge. The Base Services Charge won’t affect your participation in either CARE or FERA, and you may receive a discounted Base Services Charge.

Where does the funding come from?

The SOMAH Program is funded by the State of California, using funds designated for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing climate change. SOMAH provides several no-cost services to tenants, ensuring that you do not pay anything to access clean energy.

Will I receive the same amount of bill credits every month?

The electricity production from a solar system will not be the same every month because the amount of sunlight available varies significantly throughout the year due. You'll generally see much higher production in summer months compared to winter months. This means your bill credits will vary based on the amount of electricity the system produces and how much electricity you use.

Will I still have electricity when the power is out?

No. The SOMAH solar PV system is connected to the electric grid and does not directly provide electricity to individual resident meters (or homes). If there is a power outage, the solar PV system will not provide electricity to your home. Solar PV systems that include battery storage and backup capabilities may be able to provide electricity during a power outage. However, whether backup power is available depends on the specific PV system installed at your property.
